mardi, octobre 25, 2005Teething days are here again!Ben's cutting his third tooth- a top one. Long sleeves and pants are adorned... Leafy crafts are made and displayed... And cuddling up with a book until sleep sets in is a welcome activity. Fall weather makes the process much longer!! The temps are lower, the breezes are more moist, and the sun's pathway across our backyard is no longer as ecliptic to my family's soggy attire. The laundro-mat expenses are rising! Ce la vi! Ben is content as long as he's in the "dry" load! Curious as ever... Happy as ever... mercredi, octobre 19, 2005Books currently on the go!We've all heard of it, many of you have been using it, and now, finally, ... we picked one up from the public library to give it a trial-run before we make the purchase! My goal this week is to cook a meal from this wonderful recipe book every day this week- and to try new things (different ethnicities!) Monday was a chinese lentil dish. Tuesday was a Pakistani curry dish, with chapatis. Today will be a chicken dish. etc. Good stuff. Jer likes to find a radio station guide to whatever country of origin we're eating from. Last night we listened to Indian Bangala music while we ate! Even Zach has been a trooper with challenging his taste-buds! "sPicy," he says. But he takes another bite! Good principles to learn from and apply are also behind this cover; stuff like healthy diet, economical tips and greater-world perspective in our consuming of food. All about good parenting techniques, practical examples, and excellent discipline methods that really work!! It's not a hard read at all, and it's not "same-old, same-old". (Even though it's biblical based, and therefore is true that "there is nothing new under the sun"...) I've already benefitted, and will probably read through it again in a couple of years. There's practical application for all ages of child-rearing. (my short moments of opp. to read this one are sitting in the bathroom on the toilet lid while the boys take a bath and splash around.) This is our textbook for the counselling course I am currently taking. Time for this reading and homework is found in the wee hours of the morn- if I can sneak down stairs before the boys awake- or later at night, snuggled in our down bed with a cup of tea and my bed lamp on! EXCELLENT book! I started it expecting to learn about how to help people with "issues", and it has turned right back on me and taught me about ME! It is a disturbing, encouraging and absolutely intriguing book which I recommend to anyone who desires better, healthier relationships in any realm. "I am called to live in the present, choosing to love based on the memory of redemption past and redemption future. If I refuse to trust, I will not offer myself to others, nor will I receive care from others. If I lack hope, I will not dream for others, nor desire their involvement. Faith that is founded on the memory of God's intrusion into my story and hope which is freed in the imagination of God's promise to shape my story for good combine to enable me to open my heart and live for love today. Faith and hope are the foundation of love." (p. 108) And then there's this good old habit. This is not my first time through this one. I find that pray-time for Jer during the day can get swallowed up by other time/ brain-consuming tasks. When I catch a moment to pick up this one - in a moment, for example, when Zach is watching a Fred Penner video- I am amazed to hear what Jer reports back to me on his ritual phone call home at coffee break. Often he has been faced with some issue/thought at work that is directly connected to what I have been praying for him that morning! It's good to pray generally, but this book really focuses in on specific prayer targets. What is everyone else out there reading these days? Let me know!! vendredi, octobre 14, 2005A PoemThe beauty of fall; stunning colors and crisp air inspired me to write a poem. I wrote the poem in 2002 after a walk with Tanya through a park. Apart from two word changes the poem is as it was three years ago. The poem came to mind recently as it expressed how I felt absorbing the beauty of a season that is so paradoxical-death and beauty so intimately involved in creating the season we call fall. Untitled

Hangin' out with Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Justin, Aunty Jen and Sam was a fun adventure out at the farm! jeudi, octobre 13, 2005Party #2!On the Harnett side of things (plus my bro Andy who stayed with us for a few extra days), we had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day relaxing and enjoying each others' company. We watched sports games, talked and laughed, played board games, went for a long walk along the Mission Creek trails, and feasted (once again) on a wonderfully prepared-by-Mom-and-Dad meal. (We really have it good, don't we. Regretfully, we were so caught up in all our enjoyment of blessings that we neglected to really remember those who are less fortunate than us at this time. When I think about the sorrow and grief in this world, and of how often I take my circumstances for granted I am moved to deep lamenting that I am so quickly caught up in this self-gratifying culture we live in. And yet the ambiguity of life is that we must enjoy what we've been given, with the perspective of suffering in mind. But need that perspective of suffering be at the fore-front of our thoughts whenever we are caught up with the good things of life? Hmmm.... Does anyone have any thoughts to share on this?) dimanche, octobre 09, 2005What a party we had!!!We had a smashing Thanksgiving Sunday!! Our guests included Tony, Bekah, their boys, Andy and Bekah's folks! What a great crowd. (We sure missed Mom and Dad though- they're out in Paraguay at present!) We wined and dined. (We sang the Doxology in at least five part harmony!) The feast was quite amazing, beginning with a "bisque" made by the man of this home. The rest was a traditional-style Turkey dinner spread prepared by myself and my wonderful sister-in-law. After the boys were all tucked in for the night, we pushed the table and chairs aside, rolled up the rug and danced, laughed and quite enjoyed each other's company. Now the guests have gone ('cept Andy), the clock strikes late, and we sit around recovering and wishing the party didn't have to be over yet. But alas, our pillows are bekoning us as well. We sure are thankful for many good things, and tonite was a reminder of many of these. A blessed Thanksgiving to you all. mardi, octobre 04, 2005Some photos from last weekenddimanche, octobre 02, 2005Steve Bell! What a treat! Tanya and I along with my parents spent the evening with Steve Bell. Through story and song Steve once again validated our humanity and the bliss and sorrow of our spiritual journey. I would love to reflect more but I must get to bed. Perhaps tommorow Tanya will add some of her reflections. Good night and the Peace of Christ to you all.
