mercredi, octobre 19, 2005Books currently on the go!We've all heard of it, many of you have been using it, and now, finally, ... we picked one up from the public library to give it a trial-run before we make the purchase! My goal this week is to cook a meal from this wonderful recipe book every day this week- and to try new things (different ethnicities!) Monday was a chinese lentil dish. Tuesday was a Pakistani curry dish, with chapatis. Today will be a chicken dish. etc. Good stuff. Jer likes to find a radio station guide to whatever country of origin we're eating from. Last night we listened to Indian Bangala music while we ate! Even Zach has been a trooper with challenging his taste-buds! "sPicy," he says. But he takes another bite! Good principles to learn from and apply are also behind this cover; stuff like healthy diet, economical tips and greater-world perspective in our consuming of food. All about good parenting techniques, practical examples, and excellent discipline methods that really work!! It's not a hard read at all, and it's not "same-old, same-old". (Even though it's biblical based, and therefore is true that "there is nothing new under the sun"...) I've already benefitted, and will probably read through it again in a couple of years. There's practical application for all ages of child-rearing. (my short moments of opp. to read this one are sitting in the bathroom on the toilet lid while the boys take a bath and splash around.) This is our textbook for the counselling course I am currently taking. Time for this reading and homework is found in the wee hours of the morn- if I can sneak down stairs before the boys awake- or later at night, snuggled in our down bed with a cup of tea and my bed lamp on! EXCELLENT book! I started it expecting to learn about how to help people with "issues", and it has turned right back on me and taught me about ME! It is a disturbing, encouraging and absolutely intriguing book which I recommend to anyone who desires better, healthier relationships in any realm. "I am called to live in the present, choosing to love based on the memory of redemption past and redemption future. If I refuse to trust, I will not offer myself to others, nor will I receive care from others. If I lack hope, I will not dream for others, nor desire their involvement. Faith that is founded on the memory of God's intrusion into my story and hope which is freed in the imagination of God's promise to shape my story for good combine to enable me to open my heart and live for love today. Faith and hope are the foundation of love." (p. 108) And then there's this good old habit. This is not my first time through this one. I find that pray-time for Jer during the day can get swallowed up by other time/ brain-consuming tasks. When I catch a moment to pick up this one - in a moment, for example, when Zach is watching a Fred Penner video- I am amazed to hear what Jer reports back to me on his ritual phone call home at coffee break. Often he has been faced with some issue/thought at work that is directly connected to what I have been praying for him that morning! It's good to pray generally, but this book really focuses in on specific prayer targets. What is everyone else out there reading these days? Let me know!!
